Inside the Somali code of silence

By Ed Mason

EXCLUSIVE: It will take much more than a poster and a PR move by the acting police chief to loosen lips about the murders of young men in Edmonton's Somali community.

In the month and a half since Mohamud Jama was gunned down in a club frequented by local Somalis on New Year's day, fear of retaliation has silenced every eye witnesses to the crime. Now, iNews880 can exclusively reveal how frustrated Homicide detectives are being stonewalled on this murder and others targeting Somali men in Edmonton.

Two weeks ago, several black men arrived at a house party near 135th Avenue and 63rd Street and before leaving they shot another man in the legs.

Homicide detectives know the wounded man was at the club when Jama was shot and they believe he probably can identify the shooter. They also know that he can tell them who shot him but he's not co-operating.
