Sri Lanka Navy denies supporting Somali pirates

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) strongly denies of any support to the Somali pirates and said the allegation is an attempt to tarnish the image and the good work of the SLN.

SLN Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said Somali pirates were operating over 700 nautical miles away from Sri Lankan waters and as a government force SLN would not maintain any connection with pirates.

The Indian website TruthDive alleges that the Sri Lankan Navy is providing tactical support to the Somali pirates operating in the Indian Ocean and turning a blind eye to their operations.

It says the Somali pirates recently captured by the Indian Navy have revealed this information.

“This is an attempt to accuse the SLN to prove the Tamil Nadu allegation that SLN kills Indian fishermen. They tried to accuse SLN several times for killing Indian fishermen but failed to prove the allegations as we have never killed Indian fishermen", he said.

However he said that it was impossible for the Somali pirates to enter into Sri Lankan waters with their small boats and SLN was also vigilant about any illegal activity in its territory.
