National Security Committee to Remove Illegal Check Points in Mogadishu

The National Security Committee which was recently appointed by President Sheik Shariif Sheik Ahmed said it plans to put in place measures to remove illegal check points on the streets of Mogadishu.

Chair of the Committee Mr. Abdalla Boos Ahmed said that they have given 48 hours those manning the illegal check points. He said that anyone caught running illegal check points after the 48 hours will face severe consequences.

“I am telling the armed men on the streets who are running illegal check points to leave the streets or the will be punished according to the law” said Mr. Ahmed who was the Minister of Defence in the last government of Prime Minister Nuur Hassan Hussein.

Mr. Ahmed said that they will deploy policemen in the 16 police stations in the city and asked city residents to welcome them and work with them.

The speech from Mr. Ahmed comes at a time when the city is in transition and security is still fragile in part because the TFG troops and the Union of Islamic Courts troops have not yet been amalgamated.
