MOGADISHU, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The new-elected Somali president, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, has said in Djibouti City he would nominate a prime minister in the coming days and called on the armed Islamist groups to support his government, reports reaching here said Friday.
"We will announce the Somali prime minister in the coming days and we hope he will be one capable of getting the country through the new phase and reform the country and form a Government of National Unity," President Ahmed told reporters in Djibouti City, capital of the neighboring Djibouti.
The new president, who was elected in a parliamentary vote held in Djibouti late last month, said the new government will be "acceptable to all Somalis and will be able to get the support of the Somali people, the international community and the neighbors in the sub-region."
He thanked Somali people for their "support and patience" and requested them to take their role in supporting the peace process and his election, calling on them to be united.
President Ahmed accepted a recent mediation offer by the International Union for Muslim Scholars between the Somali transitional government he leads and the armed hard-line groups opposed to his government calling on them to stop fighting and offered to talk with them.
"This is not a time of war. It is a time of peace and we should all support the peace," President Ahmed said.
Ahmed sent his condolences to the family and friends of the director of Horn Afrik Media Network in Mogadishu, Said Tahlil Ahmed, who was killed by unidentified gunmen near the main Mogadishu Bakara market.
President Ahmed praised local media for "the sacrifices" they are making in informing the Somali public and the world as a whole about what is happening in the war-torn Somalia saying it was now shocking that a journalist would be killed for expressing his views.
