Three Filipino sailors on board a Belgian vessel that was hijacked by Somali pirates were freed by their captors last Saturday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported yesterday.
In a statement posted in the DFA's official website (http://dfa.gov.ph), the department said the news was reported by the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi.
“The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi confirmed the release of MV Pompei and its crew following reports from the Belgian government over the weekend,” the statement said.
MV Pompei was captured by the pirates in April.
The three Filipino sailors were in good health, the DFA said.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs is awaiting information from the vessel’s principal on the repatriation of the Filipino seafarers,” the statement added.
“Following its release, the number of Filipino seafarers in the custody of Somali pirates has gone down to 44, involving four vessels.”
