Somalia: President congratulates Djibouti for its national day

Somalia’s president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed sent Saturday congratulatory message to Djibouti president and people for the celebration of the country’s Independence Day.

The Republic of Djibouti gained its independence from France on June 27, 1977.

“The Somali president sent congratulatory message to his partner Ismail Omar Guelleh President of Republic of Djibouti, on the occasion of the country's Independence Day.

In the message, the president congratulated the president, the government and people of the Republic of Djibouti on the country's Independence Day,” said Abdulkadir Barnamij, the information director of the Somali presidential palace.

A ceremony commemorating Djibouti Independence day started at midnight in the capital and more delegates from the world including a delegation from the Somali government led by the speaker of parliament Sheik Aden Mohamed Nor are expected to attend the celebration.

Officials said President Ismail Omar Guelleh will attend the ceremony and will include his speech about Somalia affairs.

Somali president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed was elected as president in Djibouti in January 2009, but his government faces more attacks from Islamist rebels led by his former ally Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys.
