Somalia: Somalis commemorate freedom day

Hundreds of Somalis have gathered Friday in many towns in central Somalia to commemorate 26 of June, the freedom day of northern Somalia and when the flag of Somalia was erected.

Northern Somalia, now the breakaway republic of Somaliland gained its independence from Britain in 26 June 1960 and the first Somali flag was erected in Somalia soil.

Residents in central Somali towns said hundreds of people have gathered in Dhusamareb, Guriel, and Balanbal towns in Galgaduud region in central Somalia where Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a controls.

The demonstrations were organized by Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a religious organization and officials from the organization addressed to the people.

The officials said they were commemorating the day when the first Somali flag was invented and erected in the soil of Somalia.

They have also talked about the desecration of graves by al Shabaab in southern Somalia and condemned the actions of destroying graves.

Somalia’s president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed and prime minister Omar Abdirshid Sharmarke sent congratulations to the Somali people in the corners of the world commemorating the 49 anniversary of when the Somali flag was erected and the freedom day of north Somalia.
