EU earmarks money for Somali refugees in Kenya

Europe earmarked on Monday 15 million euros (20 million dollars) to help Somalis living in giant refugee camps in Kenya that are home to some 278,000 people.

"The Dadaab camps are home to three times more people than intended," said European Union humanitarian aid commissioner Kristalina Georgieva. "This year alone, the Somali crisis will send another 100,000 people fleeing across the border."

Georgieva said the money would enable the construction of extensions to the camps following the attribution by Kenyan authorities of an additional 1,370 hectares (more than five square miles) of land.
