Somalis concerned donations will dwindle

Some Somalis in Minnesota are worried that recent indictments will cause fewer Somalis to donate to charitable causes.

Two Rochester Somali women were among those indicted last week. Federal officials say the women were raising money for the terrorist group al-Shabab.

Imam Hassan Mohamud leads the Dawah mosque in St. Paul. Mohamud says donations from the mosque's members have declined significantly since the indictments. He says some Somalis are afraid their donations will look suspicious to the government. Others simply don't trust people asking for donations.

Minnesota Public Radio says Mohamud is taking the unusual step of visiting families and businesses to reassure them the donations are going to the mosque.
