Somalia will be at the Games

SINGAPORE

The magical lure of sport is working even in war-ravaged Somalia, according to NewsBlaze.

The news website based in California has reported that Somali National Olympic Committee (NOC) have confirmed they will participate in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Singapore from Aug 14 to 26.

Chairman of the Athletic Commission of the Somali Olympic Committee, Hassan Ahmed Barre, told reporters in Mogadishu last Saturday that two athletes and three officials under his leadership will represent the country at the Games.

The Games will see around 3,600 athletes from 205 NOCs aged between 14 to 18 years doing battle in the 26 Olympic sports.

"Although Somalia is currently experiencing a very critical moment, we have decided not to miss the Youth Olympic Games, the first of its kind ever organised by the International Olympic Committee (of) which Somalia is a full member," Hassan said in his press conference.

Hassan participated in a meeting held in Singapore in April, where international delegates were briefed on developments surrounding the Youth Olympics.

Somalia have not had a functioning central government for the past two decades due to a lengthy and vicious civil war.
