Jawari leads clean-up exercise in Baidoa following days of protests - Sabahionline.com
Somali Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) led Baidoa residents in a clean-up exercise Wednesday (April 2nd), following days of protests sparked by the formation of two competing regional administrations.
On March 23rd, at least two people were killed and two others wounded in the town after two the rival groups clashed, with protestors from both sides burning tyres and barricading the streets.
Jawari and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Baidoa on March 30th to mediate between the two rival groups in an effort to reach a political solution to the crisis.
"It is very encouraging to see that the population as well as the local administration have come out and decided to clean up their town [following the demonstrations]," Jawari said. "I am very encouraged and pleased with the civil and wise way in which the residents have decided to hold a dialogue and settle their differences peacefully."
Jawari said the residents were "determined to set up their own administration and they deserve the support of the central government in their quest".
Calm has returned to Baidoa as AMISOM and the Somali National Army conduct security patrols in the town's key junctions.
