A hardline Somali leader says efforts to unite Islamic insurgents in an effort to topple the government are at an advanced stage.
Newly appointed Islamic Party leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys says he returned to Somalia in April to unite important Islamic groups. Aweys, who is accused of having links with al-Qaida, spoke to The Associated Press on Monday. Aweys denies he has links with al-Qaida.
Somalia's Islamic insurgents have fractured in recent months. One group supports a strict interpretation of Islam. Others want to continue centuries-old traditions in predominantly Muslim Somalia.
Islamic insurgents have been trying to topple the weak, U.N.-backed government for two years. Somalia has not had an effective government for 18 years.
