Libyan President Comes to the Defence of Somali Pirates

Speaking at a regional African leaders meeting, the Libyan President Moamar Al-Qadafi called Somali pirates defenders of their rights.

Mr. Al-Qadafi said that he will try to explain to the world the roots causes of piracy in Somalia seas so that the international community stops the illegal exploitation of Somalia resources. “They (the pirates) are not thugs or criminals but they are people defending their territory from those illegally taking their resources” said the President.

The Libyan President blamed some countries he did not name for exploiting Somali seas and called their actions unrestrained greed.

The remarks by the Libyan President comes at time when piracy on Somalia seas has gained world wide attention and led to the unprecedented deployment of navies from the world’s most powerful countries. Some of these countries like Iran and the United States do not even see eye to eye on any issues.
