Somalia: Heavy fighting erupts in south Mogadishu

Heavy fighting between government soldiers and Islamist rebels started in Dharkeynley district in Mogadishu, witnesses said on Tuesday.

The fighting started after government soldiers attacked a base of Islamist rebels in Galbeed police station in Dharkeyley district in Mogadishu.

Dharkeynley has been stable district for the last three weeks and more people who fled to the area started again to flee from their houses in fear for further escalation of the fighting.

No casualties have been reported yet and the warring sides are using heavy machine guns and mortars.

On the other hand, government soldiers have taken the control of Yaqshid police station in north Mogadishu again on Tuesday morning after they launched heavy attack on the rebels who sized the police station on Monday evening.

But the rebels are still around the area and sporadic fighting is under way. The sound of mortars could be heard in the area.
