Somalia: This week's Humanitarian Official statement from the UN office OCHA

Sporadic fighting continued in Mogadishu during the week in Karaan, Hodan and Yaaqshiid districts with sources saying that at least 50 people were killed and more than 60 others injured and admitted into the three main hospitals of Madina, Kayseney and Daynile in the capital. According to a local Human Rights Organisation (Elman), at least 397 people have been killed and 1,738 others wounded since heavy fighting started on 7 May, between government forces and insurgents.

As of 30 June, UNHCR says nearly 190,000 people have been displaced from Mogadishu since 7 May, with the highest numbers – 58,000 having moved within the city into relatively safer areas. At least 50,000 have gone to the Afgooye IDP settlements while the rest have moved to other parts of the country.

Reports of deepening drought conditions in central and northern Somalia and parts of Gedo region continue to be received. On 28 June, authorities in Somaliland called on the humanitarian community to assist drought-affected people in the area. According to the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWSNET), the drought in central regions has extended north into the key pastoral areas of the Sool plateau, Nugal valley and Hawd livelihood zones and is endangering the livelihoods of more than 700,000 pastoralists and a significant number of urban households whose income and food sources are linked to livestock marketing and trade.

On the night of 2 July, a fire broke out in Tawakal IDP settlement in Bossaso Puntland, reducing to ashes at least 500 houses and destroying household items. Four people were injured in the incident. An emergency meeting was called on the same day to map out response to assist the affected families.

WFP and its partner Danish Refugee Council in Puntland successfully completed a month-long registration process of IDPs. The new caseload of IDPs as of July is 63,084 beneficiaries up from 45,158 beneficiaries until early May 2009. The 40 percent sharp increase is mainly attributed to the current displacement of people fleeing the fighting in Mogadishu. WFP has revised the IDP caseload for food aid interventions in Bossaso sub office accordingly starting this July.

Response

During the week, UNHCR together with LNGO CED started the distribution of non-food items to 4,905 IDPs living in km13 IDP settlement on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

Despite the ongoing fighting, Mogadishu port is still operational and humanitarian supplies into the country continue. On 26 June, 13,600 metric tones of WFP food arrived safely in Mogadishu under European Union naval escort.

WFP food distributions continued during the week in parts of the country despite constrained access. In Puntland, a total of 996 metric tons went to 61,700 beneficiaries under the general food distribution and through blanket supplementary feeding for children less than five years in Galdogob and Jariban districts, Mudug region. In Gaalkacyo, some 4,000 under targeted supplementary feeding programme and 811 participants of food for assets in Dangorayo, Kubo and Balibusle districts and 24 caretakers in Bossaso hospital were reached. In Sakow, Salagle and Buale districts, Middle Juba, 158,000 people benefited from distributions under supplementary feeding and general food distribution programmes. The distributions were conducted peacefully, but delayed in some locations due to heavy rains and impassable roads.

The 16 wet feeding sites in Mogadishu that have been closed since 20 June due to insecurity are expected to resume operations this week. The sites have been a source of life-saving hot meals for at least 80,000 vulnerable people since November 2007.
