AHMED Omer has spent his first day at the Town Hall today as Britain’s first-elected Somali mayor.
He took office last night in an historic ceremony in London’s East End.
The proud 46-year-old son of a merchant seaman, a Tower Hamlets councillor who represents Bow East at the Town Hall, was just “over the moon” when he was elected unopposed to the mayoral role at the council’s AGM.
Ahmed came to Britain in the 1970s and went to school in Whitechapel. He lives today in Bethnal Green with his family and works for the East London Somali welfare centre in.
That’s a challenge he’s is looking forward to—combining his job with his Town Hall duties as mayor.
He pledges as mayor to visit every primary school on his manor—when he’s invited, of course.
