Dr. Omar Iimaan Abuubakar who has been the leader of Hisbul Islam and of the fiercest critics of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia has transferred his leadership post to Sheik Hasan Daahir Aweis, another fierce critic of the TFG.
Dr. Omar said he decided to transfer the leadership of Hisbul Islam on his own and that there has not been any pressure on him to do so. Hisbul Islam is one of the Islamic insurgent groups battling the TFG for control of Mogadishu. The other one is the well-armed Al-Shabaab militia that controls large areas of southern Somalia.
The incoming leader of Hisbul Islam Sheik Hasan also spoke at the ceremony of the transfer of power and said that Somalis have become to be known for holding on to positions of power and refusing to transfer power but their party has began to transfer powers peacefully.
Hisbul Islam is an umbrella organization that unites four groups that have waged war against the occupation of Ethiopian troops from 2006 until they withdrew from Somalia earlier this year.
This change of leadership in one of the insurgent groups fighting the TFG comes at time when forces from the TFG and the opposition groups of Al-Shabaab and Hisbul Islam are locked into fierce battles for control of Mogadishu.
It also comes not longer after one of the top commanders of Al-Shabaab militia Sheik Mukhtar Roobow Ali Abu Mansuur recently resigned from his post as the spokesman of Al-Shabaab militia and transferred the position to one of his colleagues Sheik Ali Mohamud Raage (known as Sheik Ali Dheers).
