Australian photographer held in Somalia

A Canadian reporter and an Australian photographer held hostage in Somalia for nine months say they're in poor health and want more help from their governments to secure their release.

Freelance journalist Amanda Lindhout and photographer Nigel Brennan spoke to a reporter in Mogadishu by phone for five minutes yesterday from an undisclosed location after weeks of efforts to establish contact.

Brennan says the past nine months have had taken a heavy toll as he's been shackled for the past four months and his already poor health is deteriorating rapidly due to extreme fever.

He implored the Australian government and his family to help so that the ransom can be paid for his release.

A distressed Lindhout says she's been sick for months and unless the Canadian government and family and friends pay $1 million she'll die.

The pair were abducted while on a freelance assignment.

All previous kidnappings of journalists have ended with the release of the hostages amid claims ransoms were paid.
