Somalia: Insurgent group vacates police station in Mogadishu

Hisbul Islam rebel militias who are fighting against the Somali government have vacated Galbeed police station in Mogadishu overnight, witnesses said on Tuesday.

The move came after heavily armed government soldiers were deployed near Galbeed police station in Medina district in south Mogadishu.

Residents in the area said they feared the tension which arose in Medina district in Mogadishu and said that fighting could erupt between the two sides.

Hisbul Islam rebels are allied with al-Shabaab which the US says has links with al-Qaeda.

The two groups are fighting to topple the UN recognized fragile government led by former ally president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, but they do not have one agenda.

There is no word from the government about the troop movement but the government vowed that it will fight with the rebels.

Local Human Rights agencies say more than 60 people were killed and 8000 civilians were displaced on Fridays’ fighting between the government and the rebels.
