A naturalized Canadian man of Somali descent pleaded guilty to conspiracy and providing material support to the extremist network Al-Qaeda, the US Justice Department said.
Mohammed Abdullah Warsame, 35, who lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, faces 15 years in prison and a 250,000-dollar fine if convicted.
His sentencing has been set for July 9, the prosecutors office in Minnesota said in a statement.
According to the charges, between March 2000 and December 2003 Warsame conspired with others to provide material support to Al-Qaeda by providing training at camps, supplying personnel and providing funds to the group.
In March 2000, according to his plea agreement, Warsame joined an Al-Qaeda training camp near Kabul, and months later traveled to the Faruq training camp where he met Osama Bin Laden.
Warsame subsequently "worked at an Al-Qaeda guesthouse and clinic," prosecutors said.
A year later, after spending time in Pakistan, Warsame "sent money to one of his former training camp commanders" and after relocating to Minneapolis "he continued to exchange email messages with, and provide information to, several individuals associated with Al-Qaeda," according to the plea agreement.
