Somalia: Clan Islamic Courts to reopen in Mogadishu again

Clan Elders and Some parliamentarians have started efforts to reopen former clan Islamic Courts in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Lawmakers from Habargidir sub clan, Saleban, said Sunday they were going to reopen Shirkole Islamic Court in Mogadishu and added that the Court will be under the ministry for justice of the Somali government.

Lawmaker Abdi Mohamed Abtidon, said that they decided to reopen the court to restore peace and justice and urge the other tribes in Mogadishu to reopen their former courts.

The move comes as unknown gunmen started to assassinate parliamentarians and other prominent people in the capital.

The Islamic Courts Union restored some peace and order in the capital Mogadishu and much of south and central Somalia in 2006 before they were ousted by the Ethiopian troops.

Analysts say the move is to drain support from the multi clan rebel militias that are still fighting against the Somali government led by moderate, Islamist president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed.
