Somalia: Governor killed in Puntland

The governor of Karkar region in the semiautonomous region of Puntland in north astern Somalia has been killed by armed militias overnight in the region, officials said on Monday.

Abdinasir Haji, the deputy governor Nugal region said that Yasin Sa’id Hussein, the governor and two of his security guards were killed by armed militias after they opened fire on his car while he was heading to the region to mediate between clan militias.

It is unknown why the governor has been targeted but some reports suggest that clan militias killed him for inter clan retaliatory issues.

Puntland regions are more peaceful that the south where Islamist rebels and government soldiers have been fighting for the last two years.
