Somalia: Opposition leader calls for insurgents to stop killing

Somalia’s opposition leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, has called for the Islamist insurgents on Friday to stop killing people who are close to the Somali government and the African Union troops in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Sheik Aweys, who spoke hundreds of people in Abu Hureyra mosque in Bakro market after Friday’s prayers said killing people who work with the government and those who are close to the African troops is not right.

“Let us not kill each other, we have one enemy and we have to fight against that enemy,” Sheik Aweys said referring to the African Union troops in Mogadishu.

The statement of Sheik Aweys comes as suspected insurgents killed an official from the Islamic Courts Union in KM 13 outside Mogadishu on Thursday evening.

A businessman who was working with one of the Islamist insurgents was also killed in Mogadishu by armed groups on Thursday morning.

Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys said that the Islamists have one enemy which he described as the AU troops in the capital.
