National Media council has surprised and dismayed the tyrannical move taken by the minister of information of the Transitional Federal Government to dissolve the National Media council of Somalia, the only independent council with the objective of assisting and maintaining freedom of the media in Somalia.

Minister of Information Farhan Ali Mohamud announced 3rd May 09 the abolition of the National Media Council of Somalia. His statement came on the commemoration of the International Press freedom Day that NMC has organized.

“We are shocked this illegal move and attack on basic human and democratic rights that suppress freedom of expression and undermine the freedom of media as a whole and ongoing process to regulate private media,” the NMC communiqué said.

National Media Council called on the information minister to respect the Article 19, TFG charter, and not to intervene an independent media organization. “National Media Council is independent national level body, and has the objective of assisting and maintaining freedom of the media in Somalia and information minister has no authority or power to dissolve such independent council” the NMC communiqué also said.

“We urge all international media organizations that support the freedom of expression to support our position and to denounce the illegitimate action of the Somali information minister,” NMC communiqué stated that the media practitioners and civil society organizations have elected National Media Council of Somalia.
