Somalia to seek UN’s help over row with Eritrea

Somalia minister for Planning and International Cooperation Abdurahman Abdishakur Warsame today said the Transitional Federal Government would protest to the UN against Eritrea.

Speaking at his office in Mogadishu, Mr Warsame reiterated that his government was annoyed by Eritrea sending arms to Somalia in the past week.

“We have been greatly disturbed by Eritrea airlifting arms to Somalia last week, breaching the UN arms embargo against Somalia,” said the minister.

Peace and stability

“This is an unjustifiable intervention in the internal affairs of Somalia,” he added.

Mr Warsame warned: “Eritrea’s action is meant to encourage the Somalia sides to continue the fighting.”

“This is clear act of furthering the destabilisation of Somalia,” he added.

“The new Somalia Government is trying to build peace and stability in the war-torn country,” said Mr Warsame.

On Sunday, Somalia minister for National Security Omar Hashi Aden, blamed Asmara for sending two arms consignments by two aircrafts that landed at No.50 Airstrip, 50km south of Mogadishu.

However, Mr Ali Abdo, the Eritrean minister for Information, dismissed the Somalia Government’s allegation, saying that Asmara did not recognise the government in Somalia.
